General fire safety in England and Wales is maintained through compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The legislation implements a risk-based approach to fire safety in community, industrial and business premises. It requires the responsible person (usually the employer, owner or occupier) to carry out a fire safety risk assessment, implement appropriate fire precautionary and protection measures and to maintain a fire management plan. All members of staff have a role to play in fire safety and the fire safety qualifications support these various roles.

All individuals involved with fire safety must receive all the required information and training to deal with fire safety issues. The provision of these fire safety qualifications will assist organisations in meeting their legal obligations as well as in providing a much safer working environment for all of their employees

The Fire Safety qualifications currently available include:

Level 1 Award in Fire Safety Awareness

This accredited qualification aimed at all staff, particularly new starters in any workplace, where a basic understanding of fire safety is required.

Those gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace with recognition of the contribution they may have in preventing the start and spread of fires.

Level 2 Award in Fire Safety

This accredited qualification is aimed at anyone involved in the management of fire safety in any workplace. This includes managers, supervisors, team leaders, fire wardens (marshals) and staff working in any area where there is a potential risk of fire.

Those gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace and will recognise the consequences of a fire in any premises.

Health & Safety Training
Level 2 Award in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health – COSHH

This accredited qualification is aimed at those who work in an environment where coming into contact with such substances is likely. This includes workplaces in areas such as manufacturing, cleaning, healthcare, transport, utilities and office environments.

It provides learners with the knowledge and skills to recognise the risks associated with hazardous substances and how to control them.

Substance misuse qualifications have been developed for learners working or studying in a variety of sectors such as counselling, the health sector, sport and recreation or community work.

The accredited qualifications offered are as follows:

Level 1 Award in Substance Misuse Awareness (QCF)

This qualification is aimed at learners looking for an introductory level qualification in substance misuse. Areas covered by this qualification include the effect substance misuse has on society as a whole, as well as the physical effects drugs/alcohol have on the individual.

The qualification is suitable for learners working or studying in a variety of sectors such as counselling, the health sector, sport and recreation or community work.

Level 2 Award in Substance Misuse (QCF)

This qualification is aimed at learners looking to further their skills and knowledge and gain a qualification in the area of Substance Misuse. It is a good progression route from the Level 1 Award.

Topics covered in this qualification include understanding how to recognise and respond to substance misuse and the safe, sensible and social use of alcohol. Optional units cover other areas including solvent abuse and community responses to substance misuse.
